Grupo Piñero recovered 3,600 tonnes of waste in 2018: 64% more than previous year

In celebration of World Recycling Day on 17 May 2019, Grupo Piñero, leading tourism group in the holiday segment, has announced that in 2018 their hotel division, Bahia Principe Hotels & Resorts, recovered a total of 3,600 tonnes of recyclable waste. This figure marks an increase of 64% in comparison to the previous year, when 2,000 tonnes were recovered, and highlights the group's commitment to the preservation of the environment.

In 2018, Bahia Principe Hotels & Resorts recovered 260 tonnes of plastic – 67% more than the previous year and 2,500 tonnes of glass, representing a 69% increase on 2017.

Grupo Piñero also recycled 630 tonnes of cardboard (+101% vs. 2017); 190 tonnes of metal (+61%); 240 of oils (+48%); and 45 dangerous residues (+61%).

In total, during the period of 2015-2018 coinciding with the introduction of the company’s first four-year Corporate Social Responsibility plan, Grupo Piñero recovered 7,870 tonnes of recyclable residues: the result of improved waste management generated not only by Bahia Principe Hotels & Resorts, but the Services and Travels business units within the group.

Antonia del Toro; director of corporate social responsibility at the Grupo Piñero, says: “thanks to improvements made within the management of waste in all divisions of the company, in 2018 we beat our recycling record, avoiding the dumping of tonnes of waste in landfill sites. The results have been very satisfactory, and they reflect our commitment to sustainability: a strategic, transversal and long-term objective aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations".

In 2019, Grupo Piñero plans to implement selective waste separation throughout the network of the group’s offices at an international level: a step forward to increase the percentage of recovered waste. In addition, the company will continue to commit to eliminating single-use plastics by the year 2020.
